“It is my distinct honor to administer your oath of office,” President Rodrigo Roa Duterte said as he presided the oath-taking ceremony of the newly-elected punong barangays of Region VII numbering to 3,013 in a ceremony at the Hoops Dome in Sitio Humay-Humay, Barangay Guno-ob in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu.
In his speech, the President advised the punong barangays to strictly “protect the people and serve the country” by being responsible in the performance of their respective mandates.
He reiterated his major campaign promises while he was still running for the Presidency, particularly corruption and illegal drugs, and the actions that his administration is implementing to keep the streets safe and the country livable for law-abiding citizens, stressing, “I have to look [out] first for the people who are victims of crimes.”
President Duterte assured the local officials that there is no politics when it comes to governance, emphasizing that his administration’s programs are being implemented equally throughout the country. “Try to study what ails your barangay and let’s discuss about it,” he added.
The President was joined in the oath-taking ceremony by Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Officer-in-Charge (OIC) Undersecretary Eduardo Año, Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Andanar, Presidential Adviser on Political Affairs Francis Tolentino, Presidential Assistant for Visayas Michael Dino, and Special Assistant to the President (SAP) Secretary Christopher Lawrence ‘Bong’ Go.
