Yamaha have introduced the YZF-R15 Version 3 to Australia, boasting a host of updates and improvements to this small capacity entry level supersport machine, that push it into a much more formidable category, punching well above it’s weight – and capacity.
A heavily revised, larger capacity engine with an increase to 155cc now also features Variable Valve Actuation, allowing for a broader spread of power and torque, as well as a stronger top end, and is joined by a slipper clutch, new exhaust and uprated cooling system and larger airbox.
Brakes have been upgraded too with a Bybre front caliper added to the larger 282 mm rotor, while larger but still non-adjustable forks are also featured, which combined with an incredibly light weight of just 138 kg offer exceptional performance.
A shorter wheelbase and 10 mm less trail, alongside wider MRF tyres and new wheels give sharp, accurate handling, well deserving of the supersport moniker, and the new R15 very much looks the business, thanks to updated styling which would no doubt leave many people wondering if this is an R3 at a glance.
That extends to a taller seat height, with the R15 V3.0 feeling like a full size bike, but still narrow between the legs for a relatively easy reach to the ground. Clip-on style bars ensure a sporty edge, with clean fairings and nice details like the tank panels and tail.
For $4,799 ride-away the 2020 Yamaha YZF-R15 V3 offers exceptional value, and I’d say competes with the likes of the GSX250R on performance, trading off some low end torque for a stronger top end, while delivering significantly more performance than a fun bike like the Grom.
You won’t get the same level of torque as the larger 300-400 cc motorcycles, but as a beginner bike capable of hitting 140 km/h the R15 Version 3 offers unbeatable value for those who want to reduce on road and running costs, while still owning and riding a stylish, fun machine. Plus fuel economy is crazily good!
