Johnny Cakes, Hoe Cakes, Journey Cakes, Shawnee Cakes, Johnny Bread, and Spider Cornbread are all names of the same bread. This recipe dates back to before the first American colonies. It is believed that this recipe was given to the early settlers by the Native Americans. Give these a try. They’re very inexpensive to make, they’re quite tasty, and they’re gluten free!

Ingredients:

1 cup of yellow cornmeal
1/4 cup of water
1/4 cup of buttermilk
3/4 of a teaspoon of salt
1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons of sugar
1 egg
Butter or bacon grease to cook it in
